I Just finished a knife sheath tonight. Its for a knife owned by my Brother in law. I did not make this knife. Its got a large grip and a folded sheath just didn’t seem like it was going to work for this knife so Im making a wet formed sheath. I soaked some 4 Oz tooling leather in water and let it rest for a half hour and then began the process of kneading and pressing the leather to the contours of the knife. While I had the leather wetted I hit it with a few stamps to decorate it a bit. Then the leather is set aside to dry for a day. Once dry the leather will hold that shape. The back of the sheath is folded over to create a belt loop and then hand stitched to the front of the sheath with two needles. Then the excess leather is trimmed away and the edges polished. Before I waterproof the leather with mink oil I stained it with black as well as red/brown stain. His knife has a new home.
